The Research Assistant position
The SIPRI Food, Peace and Security Programme conducts research on food systems in fragile settings, specifically the intersection between food security, conflict and peace. It explores this intersection from various perspectives, including gender and climate change, as well as in different conflict settings. The programme also investigates the role of humanitarian, development and peacebuilding actors and donors in breaking the vicious cycle of food security and violent conflict and guides these actors on how to strengthen food systems' resilience and contribute to the prospect of peace. Current research projects include enhancing the effectiveness in fragile contexts with a particular emphasis on the nexus between climate, food security, and peace; investigating the role of major humanitarian agencies in contributing to an environment conducive to peace and crisis prevention by designing conflict-sensitive, preventative humanitarian action that addresses food insecurity; and rural land rights and food security in a changing climate.

Tasks and responsibilities
The Research Assistant in Food, Peace and Security will, as directed by the Director of the Food, Peace and Security Programme:  


• Assist with research projects and tasks related to topics that are part of the programme’s research agenda, which could include field-based research;
• Conduct literature reviews and data collection in support of the programme’s research agenda;
• Support the development of new and ongoing projects;
• Support the communication of research findings through research papers, reports, policy briefs, conferences, and other outlets;
• Support the fundraising efforts of the Food, Peace and Security Programme and the Peace and Development cluster;
• Contribute to a pleasant and stimulating intellectual and work environment; and
• Collaborate with others, including on research, fundraising and outreach.

 Requirements
The person we are looking for should have familiarity with food systems and security, as well as peacebuilding, conflict and security-related topics.


• A Master’s degree focused on peace and conflict research, human security, development studies, political science, international relations or similar;
• Proactive and self-motivated;
• Proven ability to work and deliver in teams;
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English;
• Working level proficiency in another language, with a strong preference for French language skills; and
• Experience working with research institutes, policy think tanks, or international organizations, is an advantage.

Contract period
The contract period will initially last for up to two years with the possibility of an extension up to six years. The post is full-time. The post requires that the candidate becomes a resident in Stockholm, Sweden, when employment starts. The salary package will be negotiated individually.

Requirements

The Researcher should have a solid research background in food systems and security, preferably from a peace and conflict perspective.


• A university degree or degrees, in disciplines and topics relevant to this post at Doctoral level, or Master's level with publications to a Doctoral degree standard;
• A minimum of one year of participation in research and writing following the completion of a Doctoral degree or a minimum of three years of participation in writing and research following a Master’s degree;
• A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• Strong analytical, methodological, writing and communication skills;
• Mixed methods research skills, with solid experience in quantitative research is an advantage;
• Proven ability to work and deliver in teams;
• Fluency in oral and written English; and
• Working level proficiency in another language, with a strong preference for French language skills.

The position
SIPRI’s work on climate change and risk provides reliable insights on how climate-related security risks evolve and how they are interlinked and interact with different social, political and economic processes. SIPRI researchers also analyse how different policy organizations are responding to these risks and provide advice on conflict-sensitive adaptation, mitigation strategies and how international efforts for sustaining peace can be achieved. The Programme also looks closely at institutional responses in organizations such as the African Union, the European Union and the United Nations. 

The Climate Change and Risk Programme, is now looking for a Research Assistant to work collaboratively with the programme director and the climate change and risk programme, assisting in various aspects of the programme’s research and operational activities. This includes supporting research projects, conducting data collection and analysis, contributing to publications and reports, and participating in the preparation and conducting of relevant meetings and presentations. Special focus will be on work related to the UN Security Council and the production of climate peace and security factsheets.

The (Senior) Researcher position
SIPRI’s research strategy in the area of armament and disarmament has identified emerging technologies as a priority issue area.

SIPRI monitors key developments in science and technology and explores how these developments could undermine or enhance peace and security, fuel and transform conflicts, and be dealt with through existing or new governance frameworks. Responsibilities
The responsibility of the (Senior) Researcher is to develop and conduct research and other activities that explore how artificial intelligence could undermine or enhance peace and security, fuel and transform conflicts, and be dealt with through existing or new governance frameworks.

The (Senior) Researcher will fulfil the following responsibilities:


• Provide expertise: Develop and apply expertise on the risks that artificial intelligence and related technologies pose for international peace and security and how such risks may be governed through existing or new governance framework
• Research: Develop, conduct, supervise or collaborate on research activities which are intended to produce informative and evidence-based analysis and recommendations for policymakers
• Dialogue activities: Develop, conduct, supervise dialogues and public events involving experts from governments, the private sector and experts from different regions and disciplines

Requirements
The successful candidate has a strong research profile, an entrepreneurial spirit and a demonstrated interest and knowledge in governance issues related to artificial intelligence and related technologies. They are a good communicator and enjoys presenting in a variety of settings.  

The (Senior) Researcher should have the following experience and skills:


• University degree(s) in disciplines and topics relevant to this post such as

• International Law and Policy, International Relations, Science and Technology Studies, Strategic/war Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies or
• Relevant technical discipline (Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering,) with a demonstrated track record of work at the intersection of policy and technology

The position
The Peace and Development cluster explores the conditions conducive to sustainable development and positive peace, focusing on how policy and practice by governments, international organisations and other actors can contribute to creating the enabling conditions for peace and resilience. It contributes to both research and dialogue to inform policy and practice. The cluster addresses a broad range of topics with multidisciplinary analysis, applying a variety of social science methods. 

We are now looking for a Research Assistant to provide research support in the area of peace and development.

Your main responsibilities and tasks as Research assistant would be


• Conducting literature reviews;
• Carry out quantitative and/or qualitative analysis under supervision;
• Provide background analysis on select topics;
• Contribute to proposal development.

Qualifications
The person we are looking for  should have familiarity with peacebuilding, conflict, and development. 2-3 year’s work experience relevant for the position. Masters degree in peace and conflict studies, development studies, political science, international relations, economics, or other related discipline with relevant experience. 

To succeed in this role you are well organized, flexible, and demonstrate communication skills. Methodological and analytical rigor, thoroughness and attention to detail are other important qualities for the post.

Contract period  
Starting as soon as possible, the contract period will initially last for 1 year with the possibility of extension. The post is full-time. The post requires that the candidate becomes a resident in Stockholm, Sweden when employment starts.

Main tasks and responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Communications Assistant is to contribute to convening professional event activities and to help provide a service-minded, fast responding interaction with SIPRI’s audiences, primarily media. • Manage event logistics for other assigned SIPRI events, such as research workshops
• Assist with participants’ registration, travels, travel documents and accommodation
• Assist with venue and catering bookings, materials/equipment including IT needs
• Maintain and develop media relations
• Set up and facilitate media interviews on a day-to-day basis
• Assist with maintaining SIPRI’s contact databases and key recipient lists for media and other stakeholders
• Monitor SIPRI’s media coverage and develop impact evaluation materials
• Assist with evaluating SIPRI’s output performance

 

Requirements
The successful candidate will have the following experience and skills:


• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Excellent written and oral communications skills
• Experience in event booking logistics and/or in providing administrative support to large, high-level conferences
• Familiarity with handling finance systems is and advantage

The position
The Director's Office at SIPRI is at the center of the management of the institute. The Office consists of the Director, Deputy Director and support staff. The Researcher position
SIPRI’s Food, Peace and Security programme conducts research on the intersection between food security, conflict and peace. Our programme research also addresses related issues, including gender, climate change, and the measurement of impact. We also examine the role of humanitarian, development and peacebuilding action in relation to food security, including specific aid modalities, such as cash-based transfers, and how the impact of aid interventions on generating peace can be measured.

The Food, Peace and Security team is seeking to recruit a researcher. We are open minded as to whether the position is occupied by a researcher or senior researcher – it is the profile and background that counts. 

The purpose of the position is to advance research and knowledge on food security and issues related to peacebuilding.

Tasks and responsibilities
The Researcher in Food, Peace and Security will, as directed by the Director of the Food, Peace and Security programme:  


• Conduct high quality research;
• Advance the collective research agenda of the Food, Peace and Security Programme
• Communicate research findings through research papers, reports, policy briefs, conferences, and other outlets;
• Fundraise or contribute to funding proposals of the Food, Peace and Security Programme and the Peace and Development cluster;
• Mentor junior staff (and, if applicable, manage research assistants and interns)

Requirements
The Researcher should have a solid research background in food systems and security, and preferably also from a peace and conflict perspective. The post holder will have strong analytic, methodological and communication skills. A proven track-record of strategy development and fundraising would also be an advantage. The position
SIPRI’s research strategy in the area of armament and disarmament has identified emerging technologies as a priority issue area.

SIPRI monitors key developments in science and technology and explores how these developments could undermine or enhance peace and security, fuel and transform conflicts, and be dealt with through existing or new governance frameworks. Its ongoing work supports international policy debates on artificial intelligence, autonomy in weapon systems, additive manufacturing, space technologies, biotechnology and cyber warfare, emerging technology and international law, and responsible research and innovation for peace and security.

SIPRI is interested in recruiting a Research Assistant to reinforce its capacity to conduct innovative work on the governance of the risks that artificial intelligence and related technologies pose for international peace and security.

The position is based in Stockholm but might involve occasional travel.

Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of to provide research and administrative support in the context of activities SIPRI conducts on the governance of autonomous weapon systems and artificial intelligence. That includes assisting in data collection and analysis, fundraising, and dissemination.

 

Requirements
The successful candidate is at the start of their career, with a talent for research, data collection and analysis, and communication. They have an inclination for policy research, an entrepreneurial spirit and a demonstrated interest and knowledge in issues related to artificial intelligence. They are interested in and, and able, to research technical issues. They can prioritize and synthesize information quickly and according to pre-defined criteria. They can present research results clearly and succinctly both orally and in writing. They are a team player but can also work independently. They can provide and receive critical feedback. They are highly organized. They a good communicator and enjoys presenting in a variety of settings.

This is an entry-level position. 1-2 years of working experience is preferable but not required. When starting in the post, the research assistant should have the qualifications, knowledge and skills:


• University degree(s) in (Bachelor or Master level).



• International Law and Policy, International Relations, Science and Technology Studies, Strategic/war Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies; or



• Relevant technical discipline (, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering)




• Knowledge of current debates on technology and international security.
• Experience with data collection and analysis.
• Excellent writing and communication skills in English.

The following is desirable, but not required:


• Background in computer science, robotics and/or artificial intelligence.
• Good knowledge of the international conversation on responsible AI.
• Experience organising events.
• Fluency in another language than English.

 

Contract period
Starting May 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter, the contract period will initially last for 2 years with the possibility of extension. The post is full-time. Research Assistant position
The primary responsibility of the Research Assistant (RA) in the SWAP is to work collaboratively with the Sahel and West Africa team in all aspects of the programme’s work and activities (qualitative and quantitative research design, desk research and publications; design, planning and implementation of activities; liaison with partner organisations; programme’s visibility). While this position focuses primarily on the implementation of the quantitative methodology of the projects, the tasks assigned will enable the RA to develop further research skills. 

Tasks and responsibilities:


• Contributing to desk research, reporting, writing concept notes and research proposals as part of the team's fundraising efforts.
• Assisting researchers in designing samples, data analytics and visualisation (SPSS, STATA, SAS, R, GIS, etc.).

Assisting in the research design of the team’s projects while contributing to questionnaire design/coding, survey management, the development and maintenance of the programme’s database.


• Monitoring of the situation in the Sahel region on academic review and social media.
• Contributing to data collection and field research, controlling data quality to perception surveys.
• Assisting in the implementation of projects and liaising with partners in the region.
• Contributing to the drafting and dissemination of the programme’s reports and high-quality research and findings through research papers, policy briefs, and other outlets where appropriate.
• Assisting in the organisation of events.
• Taking part in the collective life of the Institute.

 

Qualifications and experience
When starting in the post, the Research Assistant should possess, as a minimum, the following qualifications and skills:


• A university degree /degree in disciplines and topics relevant to this position (political sciences, international relations, social sciences, public policy). Coursework in data analytics, data management or data sciences would be an asset.
• Proficient in using Microsoft Excel/Stata/R/Tableau/GIS.
• Experience in quantitative data collection and data collection tools such as Kobo Toolbox would be an asset.
• Experience working in, or on, the region relevant to the team’s projects.
• Experience working in an international environment, preferably with African civil society organisations, universities, and research centres.
• Experience in generating maps and infographics design would be an asset.
• Fluency, both spoken and written, in English and French.

Om rollen
Till tjänsten som löne- och ekonomiadministratör söker söker vi dig som har erfarenhet och intresse av att framför allt arbeta med lön, men även med redovisning.

Lönekörningarna är outsourcade, men du kommer att ha ett nära samarbete med konsultföretaget vid lönekörning så att in- och utdata är korrekta. Kommunikationen med konsultföretaget sker framför allt skriftligt på svenska.

Du kommer också att arbeta med registrering och bokföring av pensioner inom SPV. Även skatterapportering till SKV ingår i arbetsuppgifterna, liksom kundreskontra och hantering av avtalsregister.

Du kommer att höra till ekonomiavdelningen på SIPRI, som idag består av ett team på tre personer vilka tillsammans ansvarar för lön, fakturahantering och löpande redovisning på SIPRI. Du rapporterar till ekonomichefen.

The position
The ATP researcher will fully contribute to the core ATP responsibilities. These include co-ordinating and implementing the continuous task of collecting, analysing, and processing data supporting the update of the SIPRI Arms Transfers database along with the participation in data launches, outreach, and dissemination activity.

The researcher is expected to produce independent research and analysis on relevant topics, within ATP, with other SIPRI researchers and with external researchers when relevant. Tasks and responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the incoming Researcher will be:


• All ATP database related work, including the collection and verification of data processed to this database;
• Contribute to the annual launch of SIPRI’s new arms transfers data;
• Co-authoring the arms transfers chapter of the SIPRI Yearbook;
• Assisting the ATP Programme Director and team in preparing well presented, effectively argued, and properly budgeted research proposals to secure future funding;
• Seek and accept opportunities to publish on relevant issues; do media interviews; intervene as a panelist, conference speaker, lecturer at universities; organize public events. Communicate research findings and publicize research activities of the team through social media;
• Actively participate in staff meetings; in relevant events or meetings organized by other research teams; and seek and welcome opportunities to peer-review publications by other members of the research staff collegium.

The successful candidate will have the following experience and skills:


• A university degree or degrees, in disciplines and topics relevant to this post, at Master or Doctoral level, or publications to Doctoral degree standard;
• At least 2 years of experience in policy research and writing; or experience in the armed forces, the arms industry or specialized defence media
• A solid record of publications; or if the candidate is not from an academic/think tank background, demonstrate proficient writing skills.
• Demonstrated knowledge on issues relating to military technology and arms transfers;
• Strong analytical skills with a quantitative background and enjoy working with databases;
• Demonstrate the ability to work within a team, but also able to work autonomously;
• Fluency in written and spoken English, other languages are also desirable, Swedish is not required.

It is considered beneficial to have a keen interest in military history and in defence and security issues. Previous experience demonstrating database management skills and the ability to effectively navigate database software would also be very beneficial in this position.

Tasks and responsibilities
The (Senior) Researcher in Peacebuilding will, as directed by the Director of Studies in Peace and Development:  


• Conduct high quality research;
• Advance the collective research agenda of the Peace and Development cluster;

• Fundraise for own research and supporting larger proposals in Peace and Development;

Requirements
The (Senior) Researcher should have a solid research background in peacebuilding and in issues related to peacebuilding such as resilience, reconciliation, society-state relations, governance and gender. A background in policy, whether through research or in practice, in each of in some or all of the above fields would also be an advantage. The position holder has to be productive and cooperative and enjoy both solo work and team work. The position
The Research Assistant will work under the supervision of the WMD Programme Director and in close cooperation with the Armament and Disarmament Coordinator. This includes working on activities implemented as part of SIPRI’s participation in the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium (EUNPDC) that SIPRI chairs and jointly manages. In addition, the Research Assistant will be involved in SIPRI’s ongoing collaboration with the Alva Myrdal Centre (AMC) at Uppsala University for which SIPRI chairs a working group on nuclear disarmament in policy and international law. The Research Assistant will further be expected to support other projects in SIPRI’s WMD Programme.

Tasks will include:


• Assisting SIPRI in the implementation of EUNPDC-related activities, including the general management of the Consortium; coordination of the wider European Network of non-proliferation and disarmament think tanks; management of the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament paper series; and implementation of proliferation awareness courses for students of the natural sciences.
• Assisting SIPRI in the activities of the AMC Working Group on Nuclear Disarmament in Policy and International Law;
• Assisting the WMD Programme in implementing research projects;
• Supporting other projects and activities within the Armament and Disarmament research area, including event organization and administrative support;
• Taking part in the collective life of the Institute.

Requirements
The Research Assistant is expected to be flexible, thorough, and open-minded with a friendly personality and a solution-oriented approach, with a talent for multitasking and, overall, a calm and professional attitude.

The successful candidate must have:


• A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline or a Bachelor’s degree combined with relevant experience;
• Strong interest in and familiarity with arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament issues (familiarity with other SIPRI's research areas is of added value);
• Interest in EU institutions, policies and strategies related to arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament;
• An ability to work independently and with great attention to detail, to organize, and to manage time effectively;
• Fluency in English both written and spoken (additional languages will be seen as an advantage; a knowledge of Swedish is not required);
• Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and the ability and interest to quickly learn relevant and new software tools.

The successful candidate will also be a strong team player with good interpersonal skills. Previous experience in dealing with the diplomatic community and organizing event is considered a plus.

Contract period
Starting as soon as possible, the contract period will initially last for 2 years with a possibility of extension. The post is full-time. The post requires that the candidate becomes a resident in Stockholm, Sweden when employment starts. The salary package will be negotiated individually.

The Project Controller position
The Project Controller is part of the new Project Management unit within the Operations department. The Project Management unit is responsible for the financial management of projects in close cooperation with the researchers. The position is also designed to contribute to skills development within the Project Management unit to ensure that responsibilities can be shared when necessary. The Project Controller also has a key role to play in institutional learning and memory.

Key responsibilities of the position include leading the financial management and monitoring of on-going projects in the Project Management unit together with the other members of the team. Keeping the SIPRI Research Project Teams updated on the finance- and budget outcome and being responsible for project financial reporting to the donors and donor compliance. Managing contact and cooperation with the SIPRI auditors on required project audits.

The Project Controller´s responsibilities also involve contributing to the development and evaluation of the new Project Management unit. This requires developing and transferring relevant knowledge regarding working practices and templates within this new unit as well as with other parts of the Institute.

Requirements


• Candidates have a degree in a relevant field (such as Business Administration or Law)

The Programme Director position
The Arms Transfers Programme oversees the Arms Transfers Database, the most comprehensive publicly available source of information on international arms transfers. The Programme releases annual data updates on international arms transfers and contributes to the SIPRI Yearbook. The Arms Transfers Programme also conducts policy-relevant research.

The purpose of the post of Programme Director is to ensure the long-term sustainability and reliability of the arms transfers database, make sure that it retains its world-leading reputation and is adapted to the evolving means of warfare, to accurately capture global armament trends. A background in policy, whether through research or in practice, in each of in some or all of the above fields would also be an advantage. The position holder has to be productive and cooperative and enjoy both solo work and team work. More specifically, SIPRI expects,

The Grants Coordinator position

The position of Grants Coordinator is within the Operations Department. Tasks and responsibilities entail working closely with both researchers and colleagues within the Operations Department through the full project cycle, from identifying and seizing grant opportunities, through ensuring that projects are implemented in compliance with requirements, to final reporting. The Grants Coordinator also has a key role to play in institutional learning and memory.

Key responsibilities of the post include coordinating the submission of grant proposals in close collaboration with researchers, tracking applications, ensuring compliance with legal, donor-specific, and internal policy requirements, managing the grants database, engaging with donors, preparing, and monitoring budgets, documenting payments and expenditure, and preparing financial reports.

The Grants Coordinator’s responsibilities also involve contributing to the development and evaluation of a new project management unit within the Operations Department. This requires developing and transferring relevant knowledge regarding working practices and templates within this new unit as well as with other parts of the Institute.

 

Requirements


• Candidates have a degree in a relevant field (such as Business Administration or Law).
• At least 5 years of working experience within the fields of fundraising/grant management, project management and/or controlling.
• Fluency in oral and written English is required; knowledge of Swedish is desirable.

To implement the programme strategy, the post holder’s main responsibilities are to:


• Design and lead: Design the programme and strategy, which includes the research direction, budget, fundraising strategy, staffing targets and an outreach plan;
• Research: Both lead and conduct research in the programme by coordinating and participating in collecting, processing and disseminating data and analysis;
• Fundraising: Initiate, facilitate and lead for fundraising for the SIPRI Sahel-West Africa programme and advise others in the programme on fundraising;
• Staff supervision: Manage and mentor staff in line with the programme’s strategy and Institute policy;

Requirements and experience

When starting in post, the Senior Researcher and Programme Direcor should have as a minimum the following experience and skills:


• A strong broad knowledge of the Sahel-West Africa together with detailed knowledge of key security, conflict and peace issues, as well as stakeholders, in the region;
• Eight years’ experience as a researcher after completion of a PhD as a researcher and ten years’experience without completion of a PhD, as a researcher initiating, fundraising, and carrying out research projectson issues related to topics relevant for the post;
• A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• Experience of managing and leading a team;
• The ability, and a solid track record, of fundraising and managing budgets;
• Proven familiarity with and respect for a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods;
• Experience and interest in providing policy relevant analysis;
• Fluency in oral and written English and French;

The Environment of Peace initiative is a flagship project that aims to increase understanding of how climate change and other environmental crises increase risks to peace and security. It will publish a major report in May 2022, 50 years after the landmark United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (the Stockholm Conference). The Environment of Peace team is made up of around 30 researchers and guided by a panel of respected international experts, chaired by Margot Wallström, Former Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Commissioner for the Environment and UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict.

A small secretariat is responsible for managing the project – and undertakes a wide range of tasks including coordinating the work of the research team, developing communication and outreach plans, managing the production of the final report, and liaising with the international panel. The Administrative Assistant sits at the heart of this team, providing day to day support to the Project Lead and supporting the administration and management of all aspects of the project.



The Administrative Assistant will be responsible for:


• Event/meeting/workshop support, including planning, partner outreach, logistics and on-site support and reporting;
• Budget and finance support, including reporting, forecasting and liaison with external contracted consultants;
• Document management and maintenance, including proposals, schedules and project plans, budgets, donor reports and referencing software
• Internal communications, including meeting agendas and minutes, scheduling and coordination between stakeholders;

Requirements

The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following experience:


• A university degree or degrees, in administration or disciplines/topics relevant to the Environment of Peace project, such as international relations, environmental governance, peace, risk management, security;
• 1-2 years of professional experience in administration and event assistance;
• Demonstrated ability of effective project assistance skills and coordination; experience in events, large projects and/or in providing administrative support to large, high-level conferences;
• Ability to work and deliver high quality work within small teams under high pressure.
• Working knowledge of Swedish is desirable but not essential.

Contract period

This post is a maternity cover. We are looking for someone who can begin at the start of February 2022. The appointment will be for 12 months. The post is full-time. The salary package will be negotiated individually.

The Senior Researcher should be a top-class researcher on the MENA region with a focus on state-society relations, governance, and peace and conflict. Demonstrated knowledge of theories of local peace and conflict would be an advantage.

The Senior Researcher should also have talent for communication and a profound interest in research, including providing policy relevant analysis. They should be a team player with an interest in the more practical issues related to project management. All SIPRI staff are expected to have a commitment to SIPRI’s values and mission, and to contribute to the life of the institute.  

When starting in the post, the Senior Researcher should have the following experience and skills:


• Minimum of five years’ experience as a researcher after completion of a PhD and eight years’ experience without completion of a PhD, initiating and carrying out their own research projects on issues related to topics relevant for the post;
• Experience of managing researchers and research assistants;
• Strong knowledge of qualitative research methods, with knowledge of quantitative methods being an advantage;
• Good knowledge of the multilateral system, preferably the United Nations and/or European Union;
• A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• Experience and interest in providing policy relevant analysis;
• Good track record of successful fundraising and managing budgets;
• Fluency in oral and written English and Arabic;

SIPRI’s research agenda has long focused on issues relating dual-use and arms trade controls and arms transfers. The Research Assistant will work on projects related to arms transfers and to the development and implementation of international, regional and national standards in dual-use and arms trade controls and SALW controls. It will also include supporting other aspects of the Dual-Use and Arms Trade Control and Arms Transfers Programmes’ core work, such as collecting data for the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, and taking part in the collective life of the Institute.

 

Requirements

The successful candidate must have:


• A Master degree in a relevant discipline or a Bachelor degree combined with relevant, specialised experience;

The Editor position

Tasks and responsibilities

Among others, the Senior Researcher is responsible for:


• Designing, conducting, writing, and disseminating high-quality research;
• Communicating research findings through research papers, journal articles, reports, policy briefs and other outlets;

• Collaborating with the Programme Director on budgeting and financial management for the research within the CCR Programme;

Om rollen

I rollen som Human Resources Officer bidrar du till institutets arbete och utveckling genom att stötta operativt och administrativt arbetet inom hela personalområdet. I dessa uppgifter ingår bl.a. att:

De huvudsakliga arbetsuppgifterna är:

Vi tror att du för denna roll minst har följande utbildning och erfarenhet:

• More than three years experience as a researcher with proven experience to independently initiate and carry out quantitative and qualitative research projects;

The Sahel–West Africa Programme explores the links between security, governance and development in the region by collecting views and perceptions from local populations and engaging with a variety of active stakeholders on these issues. The Researcher position

Main tasks and responsibilities

The successful candidate will develop, manage and run a thriving programme on peace, security and conflict issues in the Sahel and West Africa. To implement the programme strategy, the post holder’s main responsibilities are to:

• Ensure the SIPRI Sahel-West Africa programme strategy is implemented, including its adequate resourcing;
• Liaise with sponsors and identify project partnership and funding opportunities in accordance with the programme strategy for development;
• Manage and mentor staff in line with the SIPRI Sahel-West Africa programme’s strategy and SIPRI’s strategy and policy;

The Researcher will be responsible for:


• Implementing projects aimed at monitoring and analyzing human security developments at a local/national/regional level and to contribute to stabilisation policies’ effectiveness, in collaboration with Programme staff, other SIPRI Researchers and the partner organizations;


• Designing, conducting, writing and disseminating her/his own high-quality research in collaboration with other Senior colleagues;

The roll requires fluency in written and spoken French and English. The position is based in Stockholm and involves travel to West Africa and the Sahel region.

 

Requirements

The Researcher should be a top-class researcher, with an experience with mixed-method research (qualitative and quantitative methodologies), a specialisation on Sub-Saharan Africa, and proven past experiences in the West Africa/Sahel region. It is an asset also to have a good understanding of civil society organizations and international players in the region, a track record in publications and a talent for communication. Previous fundraising experience and/or management of people/budgets is a further asset.

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:


• A university degree or degrees, in disciplines and topics relevant to this post, at preferably a Doctoral level, or publications to Doctoral degree standard.
• The Researcher should have a work experience of more than 3 years in a relevant field.
• Proven skills in quantitative/qualitative research;
• A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• Knowledge of peace, conflict, stability and fragility issues in the region;
• Proven experience in planning and executing (high-level) events in Europe and in Africa.

SIPRI’s research area “Peace and Development” explores the conditions conducive to sustainable development and positive peace, focusing on how good development and security policy and practice can contribute to creating the enabling conditions that promote a lasting peace. Main tasks

• Collecting and processing information to support desk-based research for the country case studies and the thematic lines of inquiry;

The primary responsibility of the Forum Content Manager will be to prepare, execute and report on the Forum together with the Peace and Development Programme Coordinator, under the guidance of the Director of Studies of the Peace and Development research area.

• Preparing the Concept Note for the Forum;
• Preparing the Forum Description and Forum Agenda;
• Execution of the Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development together with the Coordinator of the Peace and Development research area;

• Carrying out consultations with partners, participants and others who work with the Forum, both beforehand as part of preparation and afterwards to assist in assessment;
• Continuously following up on the Forum and feeding lessons learnt into SIPRI’s work throughout the year; and
• Carrying out and disseminating the results of research within the broad remit of the peace and development research area.

 

Requirements

The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following experience:


• PhD, or Masters degree in peace and conflict studies, development studies, political science, international relations, economics, or other related discipline with relevant experience.
• Experience from diplomatic work, external relations, or other forms of international service.
• 4-6 years of work experience relevant for the position.
• Ease of working in oral and written English with further language proficiency a useful advantage.
• Broad knowledge of peacebuilding, conflict and development.

 

Contract period

Starting 1 October or as soon as possible. The appointment will be a 2-year contract with possibility of extension. The post is full-time. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
