The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) seeks two research assistants to support the development, background research, delivery and evaluation of the 2026 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development, which will take place on 25-27th May 2026.  

Key Responsibilities 


• Support the development of high-level and SIPRI led sessions - conduct background research and literature searches on relevant thematic topics to ensure Forum sessions are grounded in current evidence and prepare, if necessary, content input to moderators and speakers.
• Act as a focal point for partners delivering sessions at the forum – support them in developing sessions, inviting speakers and provide logisitical support.
• Maintain and update the online Forum platform. 
• Serve as part of the hosting team during the event and manage post forum tasks such as reimbursements and evaluation.

We are looking for an organised, solutions-oriented person who is calm under pressure. This role is ideal for an early-career professional with a background in peace, development, and international policy.

Requirements  

The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following experience: 


• Master’s degree, or Bachelor’s degree with work experience, in a relevant field. 
• 1+ years’ experience supporting research. 
• Experience assisting with large, high-level events. 
• Strong organisational and administrative skills. 
• Ability to manage competing tasks under pressure. 
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. 

This roles will begin in February 2025. The appointment will be for 5 months (fixed-term contract for Researchers). The post is full-time and based in Stockholm. The salary package will be negotiated individually.

About the Role

As Project & Events Coordinator, you will play a key role in supporting SIPRI’s work on non-proliferation and disarmament, both within the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium (EUNPDC) and the wider Armament & Disarmament (A&D) Research Programme.

You will support the EUNPDC’s general management and SIPRI-led activities, including coordination of the European Network of Independent Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Think Tanks. SIPRI’s Food, Peace and Security Programme studies the intersection between food security, conflict dynamics and peacebuilding processes. The Role
We are seeking a Research Assistant to contribute to the research conducted by the Food, Peace and Security Programme. The position is especially focused on supporting the research on social cohesion building efforts by, and coordination with, the Sahel Resilience Partners. This role offers a unique opportunity to be part of an engaged research team working at the intersection of policy and practice in peace and development.

The Role

Context

SIPRI is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. Established in 1966, SIPRI provides data, analysis and recommendations, based on open sources, to policymakers, researchers, media and the interested public. SIPRI's research on arms production and military spending has been at the core of the institute's work since its foundation. This work is largely based on two comprehensive and open-access databases: the Arms Industry Database and the Military Expenditure Database. These exemplify SIPRI's core values of transparency, by using only open sources that can be independently checked, and universality, by including data on almost every country in the world.

Main tasks and responsibilities

The Research Assistant will work under the supervision of the Programme Director of the MILAP Programme hosted within SIPRI's armament and disarmament research area. The Research Assistant will contribute to the implementation of activities related to projects in the MILAP Programme. The main tasks and responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:


• Supporting the MILAP Programme's research activities, including data collection, analysis and drafting reports on military spending and the arms industry;
• Identifying new potential information sources and validating them with the team;
• Assisting with data launches and producing content for the SIPRI Yearbook and other projects;

Requirements

• a university degree or degrees in disciplines and topics relevant to this post;

• experience of open-source information research;

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is seeking an experienced Senior Researcher with a focus on conflict and peacebuilding for its Climate Change and Risk (CCR) Programme. The post provides a unique opportunity to engage with both policy and academia.

The Senior Researcher will lead and develop high quality research to better understand the security implications of climate change, and opportunities for peace in regions highly exposed to climate change. This includes research on how climate-related security risks emerge, evolve, and interlink with different social, political and economic processes, including violent conflict. The cutting-edge, policy-relevant research is geared to supporting organizations’ responses to such risks.

The Senior Researcher position
The primary responsibility of the position is to design, lead and deliver high quality research on climate-related security risks. This includes conducting research, developing and helping others develop research ideas, managing staff and  research projects, disseminating research, partner engagement and fundraising.

Within the CCR Programme, the Senior Researcher will play a critical role in maintaining the high quality and relevance of SIPRI's research, and is expected to develop their own research agenda oriented towards:


• when, why and for whom climate-related security risks arise (in a specific geography/geographies)
• how organizations are able to efficiently respond to risks and proactively promote peace through implementation

While working independently, they will collaborate closely with the Programme Director and other researchers to carry out research including, but not limited to, climate security risk assessments, environmental peacebuilding, ecological security, food insecurity and conflict prevention.

The Senior Researcher will collaborate to fulfil the following responsibilities:


• Research, analysis, fundraising and advice: with the Programme Director, and other programmes and researchers

• A Doctoral level degree in peace and conflict research, international relations/studies, political science or a similar field, or publications to a Doctoral degree standard
• At least 5 years' experience as a researcher initiating and carrying out their own research projects
• A record of publications (including policy-related ones) commensurate with the length of time worked in research
• Strong knowledge of issues relating to climate-related security risks, with a focus on armed conflict and peacebuilding, either more broadly or in a specific sub-area (e.g. development, migration or organizational responses)
• Strong knowledge of qualitative research methods
• Proven ability to work and deliver in small teams
• Proven fundraising experience
• Proven mastery of spoken and written English, with working proficiency in another United Nations language an advantage

The Senior Researcher position
The primary responsibility of the Senior Researcher is the delivery of high-quality research on the links between security, development and governance in the Sahel and West Africa region. This includes managing staff in order to deliver on the programme’s research agenda, disseminate research to various audiences and fundraise for research activities.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Contributing to the implementation of the Sahel and West Africa Programme’s projects and related activities;
• Advancing the programme’s work, in particular its survey methodology, in countries in and adjacent to the region;
• Contributing to data collection, field research and analyses, using quantitative and qualitative research methods;
• Liaising with the development and humanitarian sectors, including academics, practitioners, key policy actors and civil society organizations;

Requirements

The position
SIPRI’s work on climate change and risk provides reliable insights on how climate-related security risks evolve and how they are interlinked and interact with different social, political and economic processes. The Climate Change and Risk Programme, is now looking for a Research Assistant to work collaboratively with the programme director and the climate change and risk programme, assisting in various aspects of the programme’s research and operational activities. The Researcher position
SIPRI’s Food, Peace and Security programme conducts research on the intersection between food security, conflict and peace. Our programme research also addresses related issues, including gender, climate change, and the measurement of impact. Tasks and responsibilities
The Researcher in Food, Peace and Security will, as directed by the Director of the Food, Peace and Security programme:  


• Conduct high quality research;
• Advance the collective research agenda of the Food, Peace and Security Programme
• Communicate research findings through research papers, reports, policy briefs, conferences, and other outlets;
• Fundraise or contribute to funding proposals of the Food, Peace and Security Programme and the Peace and Development cluster;

Requirements
The Researcher should have a solid research background in food systems and security, and preferably also from a peace and conflict perspective. The position
The ATP researcher will fully contribute to the core ATP responsibilities. These include co-ordinating and implementing the continuous task of collecting, analysing, and processing data supporting the update of the SIPRI Arms Transfers database along with the participation in data launches, outreach, and dissemination activity.

The researcher is expected to produce independent research and analysis on relevant topics, within ATP, with other SIPRI researchers and with external researchers when relevant. SIPRI is interested in recruiting a Senior Researcher to reinforce its capacity to conduct innovative work on the governance of the risks that artificial intelligence pose for international peace and security.

The position is based in Stockholm but might involve occasional travel.

Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Senior researcher is to develop and conduct research and other activities that explore how artificial intelligence could undermine or enhance peace and security, fuel and transform conflicts, and be dealt with through existing or new governance frameworks.

• University degree(s) in disciplines and topics relevant to this post such as

• Relevant technical discipline (Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering,) with a demonstrated track record of work at the intersection of policy and technology


• At least 5 years of relevant work experience at the intersection of policy and technology;
• Research or professional background relevant to this post such as computer science, mechanical engineering, robotics, political science, international law, arms control or science and technology policy, or processes related to the governance of emerging technologies;
• A record of publications or communications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research or in impacting policy
• Experience in publishing and verbal communication on complex technological or policy issues;

Research Assistant position

Requirements and experience
When starting in post, the Senior Researcher and Programme Director should have:


• A strong background of research and writing on relevant topics, ideally including both scholarly and policy-focused writing;

• Experience with communicating results and information to a non-expert audience;
• Experience of managing and leading a team of senior staff;

Main tasks and responsibilities

The successful candidate will develop, manage and run a thriving programme on peace, security and conflict issues in the Sahel and West Africa. To implement the programme strategy, the post holder’s main responsibilities are to:


• Ensure overall SIPRI Sahel-West Africa programme design and strategy including the research direction, budget, fundraising strategy, staffing targets and outreach;

Requirements

The Senior Researcher & Programme Director should be a world-class researcher on the Sahel region and West-African conflict, security and peacebuilding, possess a deep understanding of African civil society organizations and other international players, a strong track record in publications and fundraising. The candidate should possess a strong track record of publications and maintain a high performance as a fundraiser, with a strong network in the Sahel and West Africa. The candidate should have the ability to respect deadlines and work within budgets. The post also requires a talent for communication and collaboration combined with the ability to manage staff. Further qualities are intellectual curiosity and an entrepreneurial spirit that can transform initial ideas into fully fledged research projects.

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:

The Researcher will be responsible for:


• Implementing projects aimed at monitoring and analyzing human security developments at a local/national/regional level and to contribute to stabilisation policies’ effectiveness, in collaboration with Programme staff, other SIPRI Researchers and the partner organizations;


• Designing, conducting, writing and disseminating her/his own high-quality research in collaboration with other Senior colleagues;


• Further developing a methodology combining quantitative and qualitative research in coordination with other SIPRI staff;

• Contributing to capacity-building training courses for civil society actors and research institutions involved in the projects;

The roll requires fluency in written and spoken French and English. The position is based in Stockholm and involves travel to West Africa and the Sahel region.

 

Requirements

The Researcher should be a top-class researcher, with an experience with mixed-method research (qualitative and quantitative methodologies), a specialisation on Sub-Saharan Africa, and proven past experiences in the West Africa/Sahel region. It is an asset also to have a good understanding of civil society organizations and international players in the region, a track record in publications and a talent for communication. Previous fundraising experience and/or management of people/budgets is a further asset.

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:


• A university degree or degrees, in disciplines and topics relevant to this post, at preferably a Doctoral level, or publications to Doctoral degree standard.
• The Researcher should have a work experience of more than 3 years in a relevant field.
